About Netanya

Discover Netanya

A City Rooted in 3,700 Years of History

Netanya is one of the oldest continuously settled places on Earth. First documented in the 17th century BCE as a fortified Canaanite city, it later became one of the five great Philistine city-states — and the site of a famous biblical episode: the capture of the Ark of the Covenant and its placement in the Temple of Dagon (1 Samuel 5). Conquered by Assyria in the 8th century BCE and later besieged by Pharaoh Psamtik I for 29 years according to Herodotus, Netanya has witnessed every major civilization of the ancient Mediterranean pass through its gates. Today, the Corinne Mamane Museum of Philistine Culture — the only museum in the world dedicated to Philistine civilization — keeps this heritage alive in the heart of the modern city.

A Mediterranean Coastal City Reinventing Itself

Modern Netanya was founded in 1956 on sand dunes six kilometers northwest of the ancient tel. In seven decades it has grown into Israel's sixth-largest city with roughly 240,000 residents, stretching along 8 km of Mediterranean coastline. Netanya Port — Israel's busiest cargo port — drives the local economy alongside a growing tech and logistics corridor. The city is organized into lettered neighborhoods (Alef through Yud Zayin) plus new waterfront districts like Marina and Shimon Peres, offering everything from affordable starter apartments in the older quarters to premium seafront penthouses.

A Mosaic of Communities

What makes Netanya truly unique is its cultural fabric. The city is home to Israel's largest Moroccan Jewish community, its largest Karaite Jewish community, and the world's largest Georgian Jewish community. A significant population of olim from France and the former Soviet Union adds to this diversity, making Netanya one of the most multicultural cities in the country. This rich tapestry translates into a vibrant culinary scene, festivals year-round, and a real sense of community — qualities that consistently attract international buyers looking for more than just an investment.
